The bio states “Bleach 03 are three young, Japanese girls who shred like PRIMUS meets SLAYER, with female shrieks and melodies scattered within.” The first tune “Samural Jungle” sounds like BOW WOW WOW on crack. The title track has got the fuck/ punk mixed with the no wave of TEENAGE JESUS AND THE JERKS. “Head Cleaner”, “The rule Of The Peacock”, “Rock Is Calling”, “Slant” and most of the 14 tracks here have all got that RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS/MINUTEMEN/BIG BOYS funk punk rock thing going for them. Liberal doses of no-wave pop up as well. While there are similarities to other Japanese bands (RUINS, MELT BANANA), I think it’s kind of cool that they got the funk thing. They make no bones about the R.H.C.P. influence. They wear it on their sleeves and they (like most of us) don’t really care what you and your stupid/pretentious scenester friends think of them anyways.

“Torch”, “Pulse” and “Fascinating Dream” are my favorites so far. Guitarist/vocalist Kanna solos like a seasoned veteran on “Pulse” and “Sketchbook”. Bassist Miya attacks instrument in such a skillful and aggressive manner that she could probably fill in for Nor of FISHBONE without to much stress. Drummer Sayuri’s relentless assault leaves you in the dust because you are nowhere daddy-o. The whole CD sounds live with very little (if any) overdubs. This may leave little to the imagination yet I dunno ‘bout you but I would still be way into Bleach 03 onstage.

While most grrrl groups seem more preoccupied with their hair, their makeup, making political statements, the fishnets, completely misguided hipster/punk cred or the attention they get from hot guys like myself (or other grrrls as the case may be), these young ladies appear to be more concerned with the actual music that emanates from their instruments. Bleach 03 sound as if they are too busy sharpening their skull crushing skills to make time for the boys. No, I will not take it personally and I am glad I made time for them.
