Sweden’s AEON (not to be confused with KAYSER/MUSHROOM RIVER BAND singer Spice's old Swedish band of the same name!) released their second full-length disc this year on Metal Blade. This is a typical slab of brutal death metal. Some would describe the word ‘brutal’ as something harsh and unforgiving, with no morals and a tendency for violence. This is exactly what AEON gives you, just what you would expect, nothing more and nothing less. There are double-bass drums and blastbeats. There are repetitive riffs and low, growly vocals. There is even the hatred of all that is Christian, and a line-up that are collectively in every other death metal band in Sweden. There is nothing here that is ground breaking or extra-ordinary….and everything that is mundane and regular. What AEON does, they do well. If you've worn grooves in your DEICIDE records, this may float your boat. If something new is what you are after, look elsewhere.

AEON can’t be held wholly accountable, the genre is overcrowded and in a giant rut. These guys have the potential to be leaders, not the followers they have become. Their first two releases; 01’s “Dark Order” and 05’s “Bleeding the False” were much more technical, more raw, and worthy of more attention from the discriminating listener. There was more of a difference between songs, not the run-togetherness of “Rise to Dominate”. Word to you boys - the Jesus bashing has been done before, and done better! The music has been done before, and done better. Put it all together and what do you get? Bo-ring!
