The third release from OM is upon us! For the uninitiated, OM is a duo comprised of bassist/vocalist Al Cisneros and drummer Chris Hakius, both founding members of seminal stoner mainstays SLEEP. "Pilgrimage" is four movements of monolithic trace-metal sure to appease fans of their former band's magnum opus "Dopesmoker."
The title track that opens the disc is a lengthy, low-key, brooding drone-fest that sets the proceedings up perfectly. It is ten minutes of bass, vocals and subtle percussion. The song lulls you into a false sense of security, which makes the comparatively amped up track number two: "Unitive Knowledge of the Godhead," even more unsettling than it normally would sound out of context. Each of the album's four lengthy tracks pretty much maintain the same level of intensity throughout their duration, making the dynamics of the whole record most striking.
"Pilgrimage" will take you to the very edge of consciousness, providing the perfect background music for activities ranging from transcendental meditation to ritual human sacrifice. The repetitious and occasionally soothing nature of the music might drive lesser listeners to sleep, but be warned: this is the music that will cause dragons to appear in your dreams and tear you to pieces. Stay alert, and stay high, and you just might survive the experience.
