  • TERRIBLE TWOS - "A+A" 7" EP, 2007 (Big Neck)
  • Not terrible, or terribly substantial.

  • Metro Detroit's TERRIBLE TWOS would be your typical bare-bones do-it-yourself punk act if it weren't for one huge selling point: electronic experimentation. Though on paper it may sound like a mish-mash of ideas, these tracks benefit greatly from the blips and bloops of the keyboard, particularly on the surf rock flavored "Alcohol + Adderall". Beyond that, this EP delivers what one should expect from an obscure punk EP, with simple yet charming riffs and a singer that's quite reminiscent of Handsome Dick Manitoba (with the exception of the third track where he's just screaming at the top of his lungs).

The major drawback here is that, even for a 7" EP, "A+A" is just way too short. With only three 2-minute songs, the listener can't possibly get a clear enough idea of what this band is about. It's literally over before it begins. Maybe the short length is intentional (2-minute songs, "TERRIBLE TWOS", get it?), but even still, unless these guys are going to achieve great success someday (and given their original sound, it's quite possible) making this EP a collector's item, it may not be easy to justify ordering this through the mail. Still, this barely-a-bite-size morsel does show that great things could be in the future for the TERRIBLE TWOS, even if it doesn't whet the appetite.
