MIDNIGHT IDOLS - "Nightrulers"

  • Invasion of your frivolity.

  • There is nothing wrong with the 'singer that can't sing' approach. In fact, countless enjoyable records have been fashioned this way. But there's a right way and a wrong way to pull it off. David Johansen, Richard Hell, David Lee Roth, and Lemmy Kilminster figured out the right way. Joey Belladonna and the guy from RATT never did.

Obviously, there's money to be made by dredging up these painful tracks again and again. Back in the day, I always assumed some record exec was getting one hell of a blowjob for allowing this band to continue after 1988. The first couple of records were decent hard rock fare with lots of chugging guitars and dopey, sleazy lyrics. "Back for More" and "Lack of Communication" are a couple of examples that pop up on this compilation. Their first EP was also decent if memory serves, off-key vocals and gritty, rough AEROSMITH worship poking out in every direction. None of that material is included.

Those seeking sources for anti-80s musical sentiments and criticism, don't blame Kurt Cobain. Don't blame Beavis and Butthead's infamous commentaries. Blame the trite, hollow lyrics and flat, nasal vocals in songs like "Slip of the Lip", "Lovin' You is a Dirty Job" and "Way Cool, Jr" (included twice here). Anyone looking for an agonizing nostalgia trip should pick this up quickly - Amazon only has 58 used copies as of this moment. While you're at it, pick up some carbon paper and a Telex machine just for shits and giggles.
